Shoes History

SNEAKERS
Sneakers go back a long way. In the late 18th century, people wore rubber-soled shoes called plimsols, but they were pretty crude-for one thing, there was no right foot or left foot. Around 1892, the U.S Rubber Company came up with more comfortable rubber sneakers with canvas tops, called keds. (The shoes were called sneakers because they were so quiet, a person wearing them could sneak up on someone.)
In 1917, Marquis Converse produced the first shoe made just for basketball, called Converse All-Stars. In 1923, an Indiana hoops star named Chuck Taylor endorsed the shoes, and they became known as Chuck Taylor All-Stars. These are the best-selling basketball shoes of all time.
Sneakers went international in 1924. That’s when a German man named Adi Dassler created a sneaker that he named after himself: Adidas. This brand soon became the most popular athletic shoe in the world.
During the first half of the 20th century, sports shoes were worn mostly to play sports. But in 1950s, kids began wearing them as fashion statements. Even more teens followed the fad after seeing James Dean in sneakers in the popular movie Rebel Without a Cause.
Sneakers sales really took off in 1984, when Nike signed Michael Jordan to endorse Air Jordan’s-the most famous sneaker ever made. During the 1980s, sneakers became fashionable footwear for kids and adults. Companies like Nike, Reebok and Adidas produced sneakers in wild styles, and new technologies supposedly improved their performance. For example, Reebok’s Pump lets wearers pump air into the shoes to make them fit snugly. Of course, innovations like these come with a price: athletic shoes often cost well over $100 a pair.
Here in the capital the most worn shoes are converse all-star as most of the teens are punk and grunge."Its really light and comfortable to wear adidas sneaker shoes but it is also very difficult to get original ones" says Shelesh Subba who thinks that adidas shoes are great. Even in Katmandu we can find varieties of sneaker shoes from Adidas, Nike, Puma etc…though the price of original sneaker shoes here in the showrooms are sky high.

Musical Instruments

GOOD VIBRATIONS
Musical instruments are grouped into families based on how they make sounds. In an orchestra, musicians sit together in these family groupings. But not every instrument fits neatly into a group. For example, the piano has strings that vibrate and hammers that strike. Is it a stringed instrument or percussion instrument? Some say both!
BRASS
Brass instruments are made of brass or some other metal and make sounds when air is blown inside. The musician’s lips must buzz, as though making "raspberry" noise against the mouthpiece. Air then vibrates inside the instrument, which produces a musical sound.
Brass instruments include the trumpet, trombone, tuba, French horn, cornet and bugle.
PERCUSSION
Most percussion instruments, such as drums and tambourines, make sounds when they are hit. Others, like maracas, are shaken, and still others may be scratched, rubbed or whatever else makes the instrument vibrate and produce a sound.
Percussion instruments include drums, cymbals, triangles, chimes, bells and xylophones.
STRINGS
Yes, the sounds of stringed instruments come from their strings. The strings may be plucked (guitar and harp); bowed (cello and violin); or struck (piano). This creates a vibration that causes a unique sound.
Stringed instruments include the violin, viola, cello, bass, double bass, harp, lute, banjo, guitar and dulcimer.
WOODWINDS
Woodwind instruments produce sound when air (wind) is blown inside. Air might be blown across an edge (flute); between a reed and a surface (clarinet); or between two reeds (bassoon). The sound happens when the air vibrates inside. Woodwind instruments include the flute, piccolo, clarinet, recorder, bassoon and oboe.

Generes of Music

Blues- A style of music that evolved from southern African American work songs and secular (nonreligious) songs. Blues influenced the development of rock, rhythm-and-blues and country music. Some blues musicians include Bessie Smith, Muddy Waters and Robert Johnson.

CLASSICAL-Music that is usually more sophisticated and complex tan other styles of music, Many classical compositions are instrumentals, which means there are no words in the songs. Classical music has it roots in Europe. It includes symphonies, chamber music, sonatas and ballets. Some important classical-music composers are Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven and Johan Sebastian Bach.
COUNTRY-AND-WESTERN
A form of American music originated in the Southwest and the Southeast in the 1920s. Early country songs often told stories of poor people facing difficult lives. Recent country songs are often hard to tell apart from pop-music songs. Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Faith Hill and Keith Urban are popular country music singers.
ELECTRONICA
Music created using electronic equipment, such as synthesizers, samplers, computers, keyboards and drum machines. Electronica is popular dance music. This style of sound became popular in early 1990s. Moby, Fatboy Slim and the Chemical Brothers are popular electronica artists.

FOLK-A style of music that has been passed down orally within cultures or regions. It is known for its simple melodies and the use of acoustic instruments. Modern folk music is based on traditional folk music and often contains political lyrics. Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie and Joan Baez are folk performers.
JAZZ
American music born in the early part of the 20th century from African rhythms and slave chants. It has spread from its African-American roots to become a worldwide style. Jazz forms include improvisation (unrehearsed playing), swing, bebop and cool jazz. Benny Goodman, Miles Davis, Cassandra Wilson and Keith Jarrett are famous jazz musicians.
POP
Popular music is a genre that covers a wide range of music, is often softer than rock and is driven by melody. Pop usually appeals to a broad assortment of listeners. Some famous pop musicians include Frank Sinatra, John Mayer, Hillary Duff and Beyonce.
RAP
Urban typically African-American music that features lyrics-usually spoken over sampled sounds or drum loops-often about social or political issues. Hip hop, a style of music similar to rap, blends rock, jazz and soul with sampled sounds.
Jay-z, Run-D.M.C., Missy Elliot and Eminem are rappers.
ROCK
One of the most popular forms of 20th century music, rock combines African-American rhythms, urban blues, folk and country music. It developed in the early 1950s and has inspired by-many other styles, such as grunge, ska and heavy metal. Some important rock bands are Buddy Holly and the crickets, The Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Niravana and U2.

Tribute to the Legend

DIMEBAG DARRELL 1966-2004
Dime was truly one of the real heavy metal characters that’s you could look up to. His love for his music is inspiring, no bullshit nowhere, and just pure music. He’s one of the few guitarists that have potentially inspired many others to pick up the instrument. He was the driving force in Pantera’s powerful, raw and high quality music. He has contributed a great deal to the metal world and will be dearly missed. He lived life to the fullest, each and everyday of it and went down doing the thing that he loved more than life itself, playing guitars.
RIP DIME
Battle Axe [Forum Member]

Dimebag Darrell was an inspiration. One of the greatest guitarists of his era, he was recognized not only for his music, but also his personality. He was not just a great personality, he was a great person. His death was a shock and a loss to the music industry itself. How has it affected the metal industry changed in the past year? I don’t know. Time heals, people move on; one death does not bring a halt to life. Yes, people mourned his death, yet they got back to producing music, just as Dimebag would have wanted to. A man made by his music, a fantastic human being, sorely missed by family, friends and fans alike.

Dimebag Darrell was one of the most innovative and pioneering guitarists of heavy metal. He personified the archetype of a hardworking, persevering, loyal yet decent guitarist that was lacking in the music industry at the time. Playing more than six years in clubs and bars with Pantera, covering their idols Judas Priest and Iron Maiden, he never gave up on music even after the lackluster release and sale of their three independent hair metal releases, Metal Magic, Projects in the Jungle and I Am the Night. Hell, he even denied a spot in Megadeth, when Pantera was relatively unknown because Mustaine wouldn’t take Vinnie as the drummer. Even after achieving superstardom, Dime was never the arrogant and egoistic mofo as many turn into. He was benevolent, helpful, charismatic… and much more.

December 8,2004 A malignant day, the day which the entire metal world and Dime worshiping fans will never forget. An utterly abhorrent act of lunacy might have banished the existence of the guitar god from this world, but not from our hearts, never. Dime lives on, his music and his legacy will always be worshipped and carried on forever. Bereaved and tormented may be our hearts, but we will always shout out loud Dime, you fuck*ng rule!

Band Names

ORIGIN OF BAND NAMES
ANTHRAX.
Scott Ian heard about the virulent bacteria anthrax in a high school biology class. He decided it would be a great name for a band. The band’s official website jokingly mentions changing their name to Basket Full Of Puppies to distance them from the deadly Anthrax letters that were delivered in the United States.

CIRCLE JERKS

A circle jerk is a group of guys in a circle masturbating. The motivation was probably smart-ass shock value. Their first album fit the theme nicely; it was called “Group Sex”. Their second album “Wild in The Streets” was named after a classic movie from the late 60’s.

LACRIMOSA

This European Goth band took its name from a Latin word that means “The part of the tears”, which is a common part of the Latin rite of a Requiem mass.

RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS

They were called “Tony Flow and Miraculously Majestic Masters of Mayhem”. Anthony Kiedis says he was inspired to change the name to the Red Hot Chili Peppers after seeing “ a psychedelic bush with band’s name on it”. It may be a coincidence, but the famous pimp and piano player Jelly Roll Morton had a band called Red Hot peppers in 1920’s.

FUGAZI
Vietnam War slang meaning “f**ked up situation”. This is what the band had in mind. Some say Fugazi is an acronym for “F**ked Up, Got in an Ambush and Zipped In”, or something similar, but Heathen friends in the military say that’s a load of crap and maybe people are thinking of FUBAR (F**ked Up Beyond All Recognition). Fugazi is also Italian slang for fake.

JACK OF JILL
Originally the band name was JACK AND JILL until Marilyn Manson inspired the name change.

JAMIROQUAL
A quote from their official website: jay, the vocalist, chose the name –synonymous with both the man and the band –for its reference to the Iroquois tribe, reflecting his own empathy for their displaced status and earth aware mentality.

TWISTED SISTER
When Twisted Sister didn’t really have a name and they were performing, a drunken old man at the end of the show came up to them and said “You guys look like a bunch of twisted sisters”, because of the way the members were dressed in drag.

A PERFECT CIRCLE
Minutes before their first gig, the band was still nameless, so the band members laid all the lyrics to their songs on a table and decided to name themselves after a randomly picked line of one of their songs. The line was “ Metaphor for a missing moment/Pull me into your perfect circle”, off the song Orestes.

BURZUM
Varg Vikernes created this Black Metal sensation. He is currently in prison for the murder of euronymous of the Norwegian band MAYHEM. Varg took the name BURZUM from JRR Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings trilogy. Tolkien described BURZUM as “the supreme and wide darkness, the plural form of BURZ”.

311
Apparently the band is named after the police code for indecent exposure in Omaha, Nebraska.

MORTIIS
Rumor has it that he originally thought it translated to “death” in Latin. He noticed it was spelled wrong a couple years later but liked the look anyway. Mortiis used to play bass in Emperor (a legendary Black Metal band from Norway).

Part IV

Children Of the Revolution

Following The punk tradition of early 80s but embracing the limelight of new found mainstream acceptance. Green Day along with Rancid and the Offspring emerged into the commercial platform and the new genre to come, simply, the pop punk.

RANCID
.
After Operation Ivy disbanded in 1989, varying accounts hold that Michaels became either a Buddhist monk or a Central American missionary, but later emerged in bands like Big Rig and Common Rider. Freeman joined the legendary hardcore band MDC and Tim was a roadie. Meanwhile, Armstrong was waging a battle with alcoholism (but, fortunately, winning). To help keep his friends occupied, Freeman suggested they quit their day jobs by forming a new band, “RANCId” which would later be one of the leading bands of the 90’s punk revival. Rancid’s unabashedly classicist sound new heavily from the Clash’s early records, echoing their left-leaning politics and fascination with ska, while adding a bit of post-hardcore crunch. But the influence wasn’t just stylistic; they soaked up blues, reggae and world styles with same ravenousness as their idols and brought a breath to East Bay punk that’s still unequaled.
Tim Armstrong remembers being approached one night before a sold-out show by a fifteen-year-old kid who didn’t have a ticket, “I can’t get in”, the boy informed Armstrong, “but I love you guys and we have the same last name”, Armstrong led him through the backstage entrance without a moment pause and till today, Billie Joe Armstrong lists that night as one of his unforgettable experiences.
Recommended albums: Rancid/Let’s Go/…And out come
The wolves/ Life Won’t Wait

GREEN DAY

Having dropped out of school (encouraged by his high-school dropout mom herself), Billy Joe Armstrong hung out with Mike Dirnt and formed a band called ‘Sweet Children’ whose name they’d later change after one of their songs based on hanging out and enjoying pot: ‘Green Day’. Punk went platinum with DOOKIE, and with their new found glory Green Day soon found themselves the center of attention even in mainstream circles. Green Day certainly didn’t set out to be popular. “Someone said to me before a show the other day, ‘Fifteen thousand people at this arena-this is everything you’ve ever dreamed of’,” says Dirnt, “I turned to him and said, ‘Correction. Its everything I never dreamed of”. But Green Day is still a potent brew of insight, irreverence, ferocious rock and roll, everything punk’s supposed to be.
Recommended albums: Dookie/Insomniac/American Idiot

THE OFFSPRING
The offspring, along with the Green Day, can be credited for bringing punk to the mainstream in the mid-90, and like Green Day, success for them did not come overnight. Long before there was The OC, The Warped Tour or even X games, there was The Offspring, formed by a pair of Orange County high school buddies Dexter Holland and Greg K back in ’84 following a show in Irvine by local legends Social Distortion.
Featuring Holland, guitarist Kevin “Noodles” Wasserman, bassist Greg Kriesel, and drummer Ron Welty, the Offspring released their self-titled debut album in 1989. Four years later, their second album, Ignition, became an underground hit, setting the stage for the across-the-board success of 19994’s Smash. Successful singles from the album got them a lot of attention and they got constant airplay on MTV and radio. Following a prolonged bidding war and much soul-searching, the offspring decided to leave Epitaph Records in 1996 for Columbia Records. The move was particularly controversial within the punk community, and many artists on the Epitaph roster, including Pennywise and owner Brett Gurewitz, criticized the band. Although their popularity since then has increased worldwide, they have lost a lot of credibility and fans among the punk audience.
Recommended albums: Ignition/Smash/Ixnay On The Hombre.

REFUSED
Though they have sold les than 100,000 copies of their albums to date, these Swedes have become one of the most influential punk bands of the past half-decade. They’ve been nominated for Swedish Grammies, they’ve won Zeppelins (the Swedish MTV music awards), but they recently fell apart as a band, holding true to their anarchist principles over becoming music superstars. With their groundbreaking collage punk, hardcore, emo, jazz, techno, and hip hop influences; their music still sounds way ahead of time.
Recommended album: The Shape Of Punk To Come.

Punk iz BacK

Punk..

During 70s,punk music started gaining its momenum and there was just enough room left for the punk fashion as well.Since then, this fashion has always been embraced by the people around the globe.

It's also true that the image of punk fashion and style have not been the same all the way.

It has been experimented, changed and developed over the period of time when the punk culture itself had to go through phases as those of like hardcore and anti-fashion,standard,crust,horror,skate and lately the pop punk. However ,the credit for punk fashion shall always got to the styles and attitudes of punk role models of that time such as the likes of musicians Ramones ad Richard Hell.

Punk fashion is all about the styles of clothing, hairstyles, cosmetics and jewelry. It gives you a large space for your own creations and embellishments.Morever, draping yourself in a punk look largely speaks your personality and attitude -"I'm proud of who Iam".

Now,that the punk culture is at the greater heights and is on the verge of taking the front seat at the global fashion mainstreams;the urban youths of Nepal too have been surpassed by the simplicity and virtuosity of punk clothing and style.

Punk is all about embraceing your individuality and being what you are.The basic thing about punk dress-up is that you dont go for frilly clothes.Forget about flare jeans as well.To accentuate your punk look go for things like skinny jeans, printed t-shirts of bands like'Sex Pistols'or even logos that make a huge statement or even invent your own graffiti. After all, this is what is best about being a punk.A punk should always take care about the accessories s/he wears and the color is black but it's good to add shades like pink, yellow, turquoise and brown.

"I love wearing punk out-fits and accessories because I love them.Secondly,it makes me feel who Iam" said Anjan Rai,a punk disiciple from Sadobato who is studying in 10th grade.

Eventually, punk fashion should always make a statement because in the end it portrays the inner side of you and that "you" is definetely you rebelling against the restrictions imposed by the soceity and the higher authorities.

So why not just be yourself make a mark of your individuality before you make a terrible mistake by trying to be someone else.
